Q & A

What is the hiring process like?

Once you apply through the link in our bio, your application will be reviewed. Successful applicants will be invited to a virtual interview. Easy peasy!

What is the interview process like?

The interview will be a 1-hour virtual ZOOM meeting. Applicants invited to interview will be able to select their timeslot on a first-come, first-serve basis.

What do I need in order to apply and join the team?

For the most part, there are no prerequisites or required experience to be able to apply to and join HNP Canada. Each position has its own skillset, so ensure that you refer to the position description document within the application form, which details any qualifications.

What do I get from joining?

Associates gain access to many opportunities and perks, including volunteer hours, skill-building, networking, a letter of recommendation, insight into the not-for-profit sector, and opportunities for advancement.

Is this a paid position?

No, all executives do not receive money or compensation for their work. HNP Canada is a not-for-profit, and the executive members are students and/or youth volunteers!

Surprise!

There is a super exciting auction held at the end of the year where executives can bid their e-points accumulated throughout the year for giftcards!

When does HNP Canada hire?

We have a new hiring cycle once every year! The exact date may fluctuate, but all are between the months of January and February. This means the next official hiring will be early 2027!

What is the workload and time commitment like?

Applicants to the available positions must be able to commit 4 hours a week to HNP Canada. The workload for each department is a little bit different based on the different tasks, so make sure to read the full position descriptions!

Is it mandatory to attend in-person events?

Usually, associates will be required to attend 40% of all in-person events hosted by HNP Canada and/or all its associated provincial branches and university chapters. However, individual circumstances are always considered (location, family, safety issues, etc), so there are exceptions.

What type of training is available to new hires?

New hires are required to attend an orientation meeting and will then be invited to a position-specific orientation meeting to get to know the ins and outs of their role. This is one way the team may train associates in completing your tasks!

What does our team composition look like?

The HNP Canada executive team is made up of around 75% high school students and 25% university or college students, all passionate about environmental sustainability!

How does the team support your growth? What professional opportunities are available?

One of the biggest perks our team offers is free professional development workshops, such as resume building, cover letter writing, post-secondary applications, and more. Executive members also gain valuable networking opportunities through mentorship and can develop leadership skills by leading projects.

What types of events and initiatives do we host?

HNP Canada organizes its events and initiatives into two core impact streams: stewardship-based community events (ie., community clean-ups, tree plantings, and pollinator gardens) and educational initiatives (ie., summits, conferences, workshops, webinars, and our annual fellowship and Earth Day competition).

Should I still apply if I am unsure about meeting the requirements

Of course! Our hiring process lets applicants showcase their strengths and unique skills. Even if you don’t fully meet the qualifications, you can highlight other qualities during the interviews. Just do your best and be confident!

Executive Team Testimonials

"I loved volunteering with HNP because of its structured approach and passion for global change, especially through the Youth Environmental Advocacy Fellowship. At HNP, I’ve strengthened my time management, teamwork, and problem-solving skills. Since January, I’ve grown alongside the Fellowship team and colleagues from various departments."

Jasmine Montrichard, Fellowship Research Officer

"I've had a great time helping out and meeting the team, and I truly admire everyone's dedication to HNP's mission. My goal is to become a software engineer, integrating law and social justice through environmentalism. HNP aligns with this mission through its commitment to equity-seeking communities and the passionate people who drive its impact."

Kathan Shah, Finance Associate

"Being part of HNP Ontario has given me invaluable opportunities to develop my leadership and communication skills.
